Heads up — Class 2 DSCs have been phased out

If someone tries to sell you a Class 2 certificate, that's outdated information. The Controller of Certifying Authorities discontinued Class 2 issuance back in 2021 — Class 3 is now the standard for every filing that used to accept Class 2, and then some.

Let's make this simple

Think of it as your fingerprint for the internet.

When you sign a paper form, that signature does two things — it says "this is really me," and it makes tampering obvious. A Digital Signature Certificate does the exact same job for anything you file online, except it's backed by encryption instead of ink, which makes it far harder to fake and far easier to verify.

It's issued by a Certifying Authority licensed by the Government of India, stored on a small USB token, and legally recognised under the IT Act, 2000 — meaning a document you sign digitally holds up exactly like one you'd sign by hand.

Mandatory for companies and audited entities filing income tax returns; optional but useful for others.

GST Filings

Signing GST returns and registrations, especially for companies and LLPs.

e-Tenders & GeM

Bidding on government tenders and procurement portals that require signed submissions.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is a Digital Signature Certificate?+
A Digital Signature Certificate, or DSC, is the online equivalent of your handwritten signature. It's an encrypted digital ID, issued by a licensed Certifying Authority, that proves a document was signed by you and hasn't been altered since.
Is a Digital Signature Certificate legally valid in India?+
Yes. Under the Information Technology Act, 2000, a document signed with a valid DSC carries the same legal standing as one signed by hand.
What's the difference between Class 2 and Class 3 DSC?+
Class 2 DSCs were commonly used for income tax and MCA filings, but the Controller of Certifying Authorities discontinued Class 2 issuance in 2021. Class 3 is now the standard for virtually all filings and offers a higher level of identity verification.
Do I need a USB token, or can a DSC be cloud-based?+
Traditionally, a DSC is stored on a secure USB token (it looks like a small pen drive) that plugs into your computer. Cloud-based signing options also exist with some Certifying Authorities, though a token remains the most widely accepted format.
How long does it take to get a Digital Signature Certificate?+
Once your identity is verified — typically through a short video call and Aadhaar/PAN details — a DSC can often be issued within a few hours to a couple of business days, depending on the Certifying Authority's processing time.
How long is a DSC valid for?+
Digital Signature Certificates are typically issued for 1, 2, or 3 years, after which they need to be renewed to continue signing documents.
What documents do I need to apply for a DSC?+
For an individual DSC, you'll generally need PAN, Aadhaar, a passport-size photo, and a working mobile number and email for video verification. Organizational DSCs additionally require incorporation documents and authorization letters.
Can a company or organization get its own DSC?+
Yes — an Organization DSC is issued in the name of an authorized signatory along with the entity's name, and is commonly used for company filings with the MCA, GST, and other government portals.
What happens if I lose my DSC token or it gets damaged?+
You'll need to revoke the lost certificate with the Certifying Authority to prevent misuse, and apply for a fresh DSC on a new token — your existing certificate can't simply be moved to another device.
Can I use one DSC for multiple purposes, like both Income Tax and MCA filings?+
Yes — a single Class 3 DSC can generally be registered and used across multiple government portals, including the Income Tax e-filing portal, the MCA portal, and GST, as long as it's registered on each platform separately.
Is a DSC mandatory for filing income tax returns?+
It's mandatory for companies, political parties, and taxpayers whose accounts require a statutory audit. For most individual taxpayers, other e-verification methods like Aadhaar OTP are available as alternatives.
Can I renew my DSC before it expires?+
Yes — it's best to renew a few weeks before expiry so there's no gap in your ability to sign documents. Renewal generally involves a simpler verification process than a fresh application.
