Tax Glossary Definition
A ticker symbol is a brief alphanumeric code assigned to a publicly traded company or security so that it can be identified quickly on a stock exchange. It serves as a shorthand version of the company’s name and is used across trading platforms, news broadcasts, and market-data systems. Different exchanges often attach their own suffixes or follow unique formatting rules to distinguish where the security is listed. As a result, the same company may appear with slightly different ticker versions across markets.
Examples: IDEA.NS • “IDEA” is the symbol for Vodafone Idea Ltd. • “.NS” shows that it trades on the National Stock Exchange. RPOWER.BO • “RPOWER” represents Reliance Power Ltd. • “.BO” indicates that it is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange. Investors rely on ticker symbols to look up stock prices, review charts, monitor trading volumes, and access company information efficiently.
