Tax Glossary Definition
Slander is a type of defamation that involves making false verbal statements about someone, which harm that person’s reputation. Unlike libel, which occurs in written or published form, slander is spoken or otherwise transient in nature. For a statement to qualify as slander, it must be untrue, communicated to another person, and result in damage to the subject’s personal or professional standing.
Example: If an employee spreads a false rumor claiming a colleague was dismissed for theft, leading others to view the colleague negatively, that act amounts to slander.
