Rectification Request

Tax Glossary Definition

Rectification Request

A rectification request is an official submission made to correct factual or clerical mistakes found in government records or tax documents. Under income tax laws, it allows a taxpayer to seek correction of processed returns or assessment orders if issues such as miscalculated tax, missing deductions, or mismatched income data are detected.

Example: For instance, if an individual’s Income Tax Return (ITR) for FY 2023–24 is processed without applying a valid deduction under Section 80C, they may file a rectification request under Section 154 of the Income Tax Act to have the assessment corrected and any refund recalculated.
