Tax Glossary Definition
An Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) is an individual with ancestral roots in India who now holds foreign citizenship but is granted the right to reside in India for extended periods. Although OCI status does not equate to full Indian citizenship, it provides advantages such as a lifelong, multiple-entry visa and permission to study, work, or settle in India. Certain restrictions still apply—OCI cardholders are not eligible to vote, occupy constitutional offices, or purchase agricultural land. The OCI program aims to strengthen cultural and economic connections between India and its global diaspora.
Example: Someone of Indian origin who becomes a U.S. citizen may obtain an OCI card, allowing long-term stay and employment in India without gaining electoral or political privileges.
