The Commissioner of Income Tax (CIT) is a senior officer in the Income Tax Department responsible for supervising assessments, administration, and enforcement of income tax laws within a specified jurisdiction. The CIT also plays a key role in reviewing and resolving disputes between taxpayers and lower tax authorities.

Example: The CIT (Appeals) hears and decides taxpayer appeals against orders passed by Assessing Officers.
