Tax Glossary Definition
The Challan Identification Number (CIN) is a unique reference number generated for every income tax payment made through a bank or online portal. It helps in tracking and verifying tax payments with the Income Tax Department. The CIN ensures that each payment is properly credited to the taxpayer’s account.
Example: The CIN is a combination of the BSR Code of the bank, date of deposit, and the challan serial number — e.g., 0512345 23/07/2025 00231.
