Alien, Tax Treatment of – The set of rules governing how a country taxes individuals who are not its citizens. In most systems, taxation is based on residency or domicile rather than nationality. Accordingly, a foreign individual may be taxed as a resident on worldwide income or as a non-resident only on income generated within that country.

Example: In the United States, a resident alien is subject to tax on global income, while a non-resident alien is taxed solely on U.S.-source earnings.
